Corporate Risk Management in the Energy Industry: A Strategic and Functional View

Risk taking is inherent to entrepreneurship provided, however, the risk-reward trade off is acceptable.

Starting from that point, the task of the Risk Management team is to provide clear and relevant information about risk exposure of the company to all stakeholders, to promote risk awareness within the organisation and, considering the risk appetite of the organisation, to propose appropriate actions to mitigate risks and to seize opportunities.

Indeed, in a turbulent corporate environment efficient risk management is definitely a source of competitive advantage.

Gas and Oil: The Future of Africa

Gas and oil play a key role in Africa. In North Africa, four countries out of the seven are gas and oil producers, three of which are large consumers/exporters.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, oil is by far the most important source of commercial energy. While some countries (e.g. Nigeria and Angola) are large producers/exporters, many others require imported oil; as such, their energy bill is a large percentage of their GDP.

Developing gas and oil production, improving the management of oil revenues, developing the logistics for gas and oil imports and exports, and methods of saving gas and oil everywhere possible are all key issues in Africa.

According to the International Energy Agency, about 1.3 billion people in the world still not have access to electricity and nearly all of these live in Africa and Asia. This two day course covers the fundamentals of developing and financing power plants in less developed countries, with a particular focus on those in Sub Saharan Africa and developing Asia.

Interesting Business Philosophies: Market-Based Management ®*

The main lesson from twentieth century economic history is that central planning fails, however many corporations continue to choose hierarchies over markets. “Market-Based Management” ® is a management philosophy that applies the principles of free societies to organisations. Not only does it offer a toolkit of strategies that can be implemented to improve corporate performance, but it also provides a coherent framework to interpret the increasingly popular movement towards flatter organisations, decentralised decision-making, and internal markets.
